Family: Parents. Ryu is an only child. His father holds a high and respected position in the Japan Police Force, and his mother is a typical submissive and obedient Japanese housewife. His father used to disapprove of many of his choices, including the friends he hangs out with to the things he likes. However, something happened in Ryu’s final year of high school which made him change his mind.
School: Kurogin Gakuen (Class 3-D) – has since graduated.
Friends: Yabuki Hayato (Hayato), Takeda Keita (Take), Tsuchiya Hikaru (Tsucchi) and Hyuuga Kosuke (Hyuuga).

Background:
Quiet and mostly expressionless, Ryu grew up with very few close friends and even fewer people who truly understand him. His one closest friend, Hayato, fell out with him at the beginning of their final year in high school due to a misunderstanding, and his father managed to persuade the school authority to let him graduate without having to attend classes.

Ryu then spent time staying away from home and working part time jobs at pubs until the new homeroom teacher of class 3-D who was accidentally hired by the school, Yamaguchi Kumiko or better known as Yankumi later on, came to persuade him to go back to school. At first, Ryu lied to her by feeding her some sod story about him owing the pub owners a large sum of money. For him to go back to school, Ryu said, he would need to pay them back, causing Yankumi to take on several jobs to make that money, just to realize later that Ryu had been lying to her and had no intentions to go back to school at all. That is, until one of Yankumi’s former students, Kuma, who witnessed the scene when he was delivering ramen, told him off and made him realize how wrong his actions were.

Though he went back to school after that, Ryu still had yet to regain his classmates trust, who had thought that he betrayed them. Ryu had admitted defeat their rival school, Ara High, right before the scheduled face off between the two schools. Hayato seemed to have been most affected and Ryu was sure he would never be forgiven, which was why he had kept quiet all this while, until Take spoke up to the class and explained what really happened. Hayato stood outside the class the whole time as Take talked about Ryu trying to stop the fight because Take had been worried about it, having been scared that such a big fight would affect him and his family and his subsequent graduation.

After that incident, things went back to how they were before Ryu left school for he and his friends, but not without more arguments and fights with street thugs, the school authority and even the police.

One of the most important during Ryu’s final year in school was when the class went for a karaoke session in an alcohol serving premise and was spotted by the head teacher of Kurogin. In their haste to escape, they had forgotten to pay and were brought to the police station. Charges against them were eventually dropped, but not before Odagiri Shinya, Ryu’s father, decided that this was the final straw and made plans to send him to Canada as soon as possible. A lot happened because of this, which resulted in Hayato, Take, Tsucchi and Hyuuga begging Ryu’s father to let him come back to school and Yankumi and her family (who are incidentally members of the Ooedo Group, a notorious yakuza clan in Japan) stubbornly persuading him to grant his permission. Resigned to his son’s choice, his father finally relented and Ryu went back to school, eventually graduating with the rest of the class.
